Duct Cleaning Day With Kids and Pets: How to Prepare
Planning a duct or dryer vent cleaning in a busy household? How to get the house ready, keep kids and pets comfortable and make the visit go smoothly.

In a busy household, scheduling anything at home takes a little planning. Add kids home from school, a dog who announces every visitor and a cat who hides in the one place you need to reach, and a service visit can feel like a project.
A duct cleaning or dryer vent cleaning doesn't need to be complicated. Here's how families in Kissimmee and around FL can prepare so the visit goes smoothly for everyone, including the four-legged members of the household.
Before the day
A little preparation the day before saves time:
- Count your vents. Count each supply register and each return grille. Our air duct cleaning is $199 for up to 10 vents, plus $29 for each additional vent, so an accurate count means an accurate estimate.
- Clear access to registers. Move toys, toy bins, beds and furniture away from registers and return grilles where you can.
- Clear the laundry area if you're having the dryer vent cleaned. Empty the dryer, clean the lint screen and make space behind the machine.
- Know where the air handler is, whether that's a hallway closet, the garage or the attic, and make sure the path is clear.
- Pick up small items near floor registers. Little toys and game pieces have a way of ending up in ducts.
Planning for kids
Kids are naturally curious about tools and equipment, and that's fine. A few ideas:
- Schedule around naps if you have little ones. A mid-morning or early afternoon slot may work better than first thing.
- Set up a spot away from the work, like a bedroom that's already been done or an outdoor play area.
- Talk about it ahead of time. Explaining that people are coming to clean the "air tunnels" in the house can turn noise into something interesting.
- Keep hands away from open registers and equipment. Registers are cleaned as part of the service, so remind kids not to drop anything into an open vent.
There will be some noise from the equipment, so plan quiet activities elsewhere if it bothers anyone.
Planning for pets
Pets don't usually love unfamiliar people and sounds. To keep them comfortable and safe:
- Choose a quiet room with the door closed, ideally one that will be done early or late in the visit, and move them when it's that room's turn.
- Use a crate for dogs who are crate trained.
- Secure cats early. Find them before the visit starts, since they tend to disappear when the equipment arrives.
- Keep the laundry room and garage doors closed if those are escape routes.
- Consider a walk or a friend's house for pets who get very stressed.
It's also a good chance to look at what pets leave behind. Pet hair often collects on return grilles and around floor registers. Vacuuming those regularly between cleanings is a simple habit.
During the visit
Here's what to expect. We use rotating brushes to loosen buildup in the supply and return ducts and a HEPA-filtered vacuum to remove it. The registers are cleaned as part of the service. If you're having the dryer vent done, we clean from the dryer connection through to the exterior hood and check that the outside flap opens and closes.
If any runs need extra attention, like a register in a playroom where toys and crumbs have collected, deep duct cleaning is available at $59.99 per vent. Our dryer vent cleaning is $99 for up to 10 feet, plus $15 for each additional foot, with inspection included.
If we find toys or other objects in the ducts, we'll let you know.
After the visit
A few habits help keep things in good shape:
- Change the HVAC filter on schedule. The EPA recommends the highest-efficiency filter your system's manufacturer allows, changed regularly.
- Vacuum return grilles, especially in homes with shedding pets.
- Keep small toys away from floor registers.
- Clean the dryer's lint screen before or after every load. Households with kids tend to run a lot of laundry.
Fire safety guidance from the NFPA, published by the U.S. Department of Energy, recommends cleaning the dryer vent at least once a year, or more often if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.
